The Finnish Olympic Committee and Adecco Finland launched a project in 2004, the aim of which is to support the career planning of top athletes and coaches and help them to set up in working life. There are many compatible aspects between the values of top-level sport and the cornerstones of the work of Adecco. Success in sport, like in working life too, requires strong commitment, teamwork skills, drive and the ability to withstand pressure. Top-level sport requires a long-term personal investment, even lasting a full decade. Moving from a sporting career to working life may be problematic, for reasons such as the following:
With the aid of the career programme for top athletes, the sportsperson will not have to encounter these challenges alone, but will instead be offered the opportunity for career coaching.
The target group of the career programme for top athletes are the sportspeople and coaches in individual and team events within the sphere of the programmes of the Olympic Committee. People who will particularly benefit from the project will be sportspeople considering finishing their sports career, but it also offers services to sportspeople who are studying and those who are just planning their studies. At the heart of it, there are the drawing up of plans, the analysis of one’s own abilities and objects of interest, and guidance in the job-seeking process. Our task is to create contacts to employers and learning institutions, but also to encourage and direct sportspeople and coaches to independent information-searching and the creation of networks.
