Athlete Career Programme

In 2004, the Finnish Olympic Committee and Adecco Finland Oy went into partnership to launch a project to support career planning among elite athletes and coaches and help them with job placement. The core values of elite sports and the cornerstones of Adecco's operations are similar in many ways. Success in both sports and working life requires strong commitment, teamwork, an energetic approach and the ability to withstand pressure. Competing at the highest level in sports requires a long-term personal commitment that can even last more than a decade. The move from sports to working life can be challenging for many reasons:

  • Insufficient or out-dated education
  • Lack of work experience outside sports
  • No experience of being a job seeker
  • From the job market's perspective, athletes can be quite old to be applying for their first permanent job

With the Athlete Career Programme, retiring athletes don't have to face these challenges alone. They are given opportunities for career training.

Who is offered career training?

The target group of the Athlete Career Programme comprises athletes and coaches in individual and team sports under the Finnish Olympic Committee. The project particularly benefits athletes who are considering retirement from competitive sports, but it also offers useful services for athletes who are studying or planning their studies. The focal areas include the preparation of plans, the analysis of abilities and interests and the provision of guidance in the job application process. Our task is to create contacts with employers and schools, but also to encourage athletes and coaches to find information and create networks on their own.
